Denied Life Insurance because of a Pre-Existing Condition?

A pre-existing condition is a health or medical problem an individual has before applying to be accepted into a Life Insurance plan. This is a very broad definition and each condition will have its own individual underwriting guidelines that will factor whether an approval or an offer will be extended.

The Pre-Existing Conditions, and the Denial of Life Insurance will always be determined by the individual insurance company. The medical condition, length of history, control and progression, behavioral and lifestyle, as well as the applicants’ willingness to follow and meet doctors’ instructions can determine a company’s willingness to offer a policy.

Example:
Diabetes- individuals with Diabetes II and high blood pressure or Insulin Diabetic will be a guaranteed decline for most a traditional life insurance policies. Individuals who have this combination of diseases will need to go to a guaranteed issued program or a graded benefit program that would limit the death benefit between 10K-50K.

However, an applicant who has Type II Diabetes, who has been actively monitoring and engaging their lifestyle to reduce his/her blood sugars could be a candidate for a for a standard rated policy by many carriers. Height, weight, within minimum and maximums, consistent doctor visits, taking medications as prescribed, not smoking, and having their AC1 score read less than 7.0 . These factors all will give you the greatest possibility of a carrier willing to pick you up as a standard risk under a traditional Life Insurance policy.

High Blood Pressure- controlled through medications, longer history of control the better, quarterly history of doctor visits, current medical condition to include cholesterol levels, height and weight all will determine an underwriters acceptability to your application.

Cancer - in remission 3-5 years can also be placed by several specialized carriers. Again, when all things considered height, weight, life style, behavioral considerations and current medical conditions will all factor into a final approval or declined.

We have looked at several of the more common conditions and have outline how a person may qualify for a standard rating. Even if one or more areas looked at by underwriter are excessive do not consider your self as un-insurable as you may still qualify. You may have to pay a percentage rate up of the premium but this is an alternative to being denied life insurance.

Best alternative for prospective applicants is to interface with your online insurance broker. These brokers can do a risk assessment based on your circumstances and shop all companies to find the best alternatives and possibilities. A company I feel comfortable with when helping others find term life insurance is My Life Insurance Rates. They can be reached at http://www.mylifeinsurancerates.com. They will take the time to do a full assessment and will scan specialized companies underwriting guidelines to help find an insurance carrier that will be most likely to make an offer to you.
