The Need for Medicare Supplement Insurance

The cost of medical care has spiraled upwards over the years. The cost of prescription drugs and laboratory charges are quite high. Inpatient treatment has also become very expensive. Many people cannot afford to pay the required fees from their pockets. It therefore becomes necessary to purchase  insurance coverage to take care of such expenses when they occur. It is very refreshing to have such coverage that will also cater for emergencies. This is especially the case when there is an urgent operation that needs to be done. However, some insurance policies do not cover all the conditions that you may suffer now or in the future. It is due to this fact that one needs to take up Medicare supplementary insurance or Medigap insurance.

Medicare Supplement Plans Pay For Things That Medicare Doesn't

Medigap policies are designed to meet the medical expenses that Medicare insurance policies do not cover. Medigap therefore pays for the expenses that are not included in your medical coverage. It is a secondary measure. In fact Medigap insurance policies must indicate the words ‘Medicare supplement insurance’’ on the form. For you to qualify to purchase the Medigap policy, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. You will have to make the monthly contributions for Part B while at the same time paying your Medigap premiums to the service provider. For those who are fortunate enough to have both coverages, the medical bills are paid by both policies. However, where the insurance coverage is separate, each policy will meet its designated expense only. In view of this scenario, it is advisable to take up a comprehensive insurance coverage incorporating both policies. At least with this option your medical expenses are better catered for.

Medicare Supplement Policies Are Divided Into Twelve Standardized Plans

Medicare supplement insurance has twelve standardized plans. Insurance companies may sell any of the said plans. They are designated plans ranging from Plan A to Plan L. Each plan has its own unique benefits. The insurance companies decide the plan they will offer their clients depending on their objectives. The client therefore needs to know what is on offer in each plan before making a decision based on their needs and their budget. The law regulates these insurance plans and therefore the benefits under each plan will be uniform across the board. In some states, you may be able to buy a special type of Medigap policy called Medicare select. Under this policy, the patient can only visit certain hospitals and see specific doctors in order to get full benefits. The insurance companies are free to charge the premium they wish for their products. It is therefore necessary to conduct your own research on the premium charged by various insurance companies and consequently make a decision on the plan to purchase under the carrier of your choice. You can also get the services of an online insurance agent to compare the premiums charged by the insurance companies in your area and advice on the most appropriate one.

Married couples also need to get their own individual insurance coverage. A Medigap policy does not provide medical coverage for your spouse. They also do not take care of other conditions such as dental problems, problems to do with the eyes, long term care of patients or expenses incurred on hire of private nursing staff. Therefore, if you are 65 years old and you have not taken a Medigap policy, then you need to so immediately to cater for unforeseen circumstances.
